"Imidacloprid"
Imidacloprid is a material that is designed to mimic the properties of
nicotine, a powerful neurotoxin found naturally in tobacco. The chemical
works by interfering with the transmission of stimuli in the insect nervous
system. Specifically, Imidacloprid causes a blockage of neuronal pathway
(nicotinergic) that is more abundant in insects than in warm-blooded animals.
This unique mode of action makes the chemical selectively more toxic to insects
than warm-blooded animals. The blockage leads to the accumulation of
acetylcholine, an important neurotransmitter, resulting in insect paralysis and
death. Imidacloprid has dual mode of action: contact and ingestion.
