This category of flies gets its name honestly: these flies
usually pierce skin (with a painful
bite) in order to obtain a blood meal. Fly
elimination usually involves eliminating or altering the material in which flies feed and
breed. In some cases, this can be very difficult.
For extra protection from biting flies (as well as chiggers,
punkies, no-see-ums, etc.) there are products made for applying to your skin and others
for applying to your clothing. DEET is used extensively for repelling or killing
various insects on people but is not always as effective on biting flies as it is on
mosquitoes, ticks and a few flies. The best biting fly repellent (for human use) is Sawyer's Broad Spectrum Composite Spray.
Broad Spectrum contains the perfect combination of DEET and R-326 which is effective
against biting flies.
First, properly identify the fly that has become a pest to your
home or family. Once identified, follow the instructions for eliminating that
particular fly. Elimination can involve structural change, toxic baits, pheromone
traps, lure traps, space and crack & crevice sprays or surface sprays.
