CADDISFLIES
(Trichoptera)
Caddisflies are another aquatic insect which breed in streams, ponds and
lakes. They can swarm in huge numbers as adults. Swarms are strongly attracted
to lights. Adults of the caddisfly Hydropsyche bifida and
other caddisflies became important pests in homes along the St. Lawrence drainage system
by swarming around trees and lights and entering homes where they settled in large numbers
on walls and other surfaces. Allergic reactions and asthma attacks have also been
associated with caddisfly hatches.
If adult flies become a pest (resting on surfaces of buildings), a surface
spray such as Cynoff WP (used
at double-strength rate) will give a quick knock-down and limited long term control for up
to 4 weeks. For non-chemical control methods, see Aquatic Insect
Non-Chemical Control.
