Once a carpenter ant infestation has been controlled (by eliminating colonies living in wall voids, attics,) a pesticide spray should be used on the exterior surfaces of buildings to prevent reinfestations of the ants.  Suspend SC (Deltamethrin) and Demon WP (Cypermethrin) are two of the most popular insecticide sprays to use for prevention of carpenter ants, other ants and most general household pests found on homes and business.
Never use any insecticide spray on, close to or around insect baits.  A spray will contaminate your bait, making it unattractive to your target insect pests.  Sprays will also kill the foraging worker ants before they can share the bait material with their colony members.  A bait can be used indoors while the exterior is being sprayed and vice versa, but never combine sprays and baits in the same area.
