Inside
Flea Control
Preparing Your Home Pets Killing Fleas
The first step in preparing your home for flea elimination
is a thorough cleaning of the residence. This step is very important and if taken
lightly, flea control will be poor or non-existent. Start by taking all pet bedding
and washing them in hot water or destroying them. Next, vacuum all carpeting and mop
all non-carpeted flooring such as wood or tile. It is particularly important to
clean well in areas where pets sleep or rest, under furniture, in cracks and crevices and
along walls. Do not forget closets. And remember, you cannot always see
fleas--particularly eggs and larvae--so be thorough.
It is important to clean or vacuum furniture--especially
between and under cushions, a favorite hiding place for larvae. After vacuuming,
empty contents of vacuum cleaner into an airtight plastic bag. Immediately dispose
of this bag outdoors, or burn the bag. All floors--including closet floors, should
be cleared of boxes and other items.
Pets, Fish
All pets should be removed from the house and de-fleaed with one of our
products or by your veterinarian. Fish tanks should be unplugged and covered with a
wet towel. Be sure that air pumps are not left uncovered or on the floor.
Remove all water and food dishes, and also pet toys from the floor and other areas that
are to be treated.
For inside control of fleas we recommend using a good
adulticide (such as Permethrin SFR or
Onslaught) and an IGR (insect growth
regulator) such as Nylar,
NyGuard
or Precor. Our Indoor Flea Kit contains Permethrin
SFR and an IGR. Ordering and
pricing information for insecticides, IGR and Indoor Flea Kit is at the end of this
article. Another popular option is to use Precor
2000, a large aerosol containing Permethrin and Precor which can be used
indoors for flooring and furniture.
Treat all infested areas including furniture and flooring beneath
furniture. All floors, carpeting, baseboards and furniture that are not affected by
water should be sprayed. Turn off the air conditioning and leave the premises for
four hours. Make sure that all treated areas are dry before allowing people and pets
to return. After proper application (always follow label instructions) and
thorough drying, all treated areas will be safe for people of all ages and pets.
Any
professional adulticide (such as Onslaught or
Permethrin
SFR) should kill the adult fleas for
at least 10 days. Using an IGR (Precor, Archer, IG Regulator is your key for successful treatment and
long term control. Remember that the adulticide kills adult fleas, leaving over 80%
of the flea population unharmed. Precor, Nylar, Archer or IG Regulator stunts the
growth of all eggs and larvae, preventing them from maturing into jumping, biting and
(most important) reproducing adults.
For flea prevention, spray Precor
IGR, Archer IGR or IG Regulator in your home 3 to 4 times a year. This will take
care of any eggs or larvae that are in your home or brought into the house by pets,
children and adults, for at least three months.
Permethrin SFR is available in a quart of concentrate.
Indoors, 1 to 1.5 ounces per gallon of order is all you will need.
Can also be used to get rid of fleas outdoors, using a hose-end sprayer.
Permethrin SFR and proper sprayer are both included in our Outdoor Flea
Kit.
You
can also order Permethrin SFR in our money-saving Indoor Flea Kit.
