To kill fire ants and control them throughout the year:
Drench each ant mound and broadcast Talstar granules.
This program may be implemented 1 to 3 times per year.

Drench (do not spray!) all existing mounds with Demon EC or Talstar concentrate. At least one gallon of finished solution is required for fire ant mounds, 1/2 gallon for smaller ones. A good rule of thumb is to use one gallon of solution per foot of mound diameter. For example, a huge mound that is three feet wide (at its base) would require three gallons of finished solution. This ensures that you kill ants deep in the colony structure. Keep pets and children away from treated areas until dry.
Broadcast entire area with Talstar granules. Do not spot treat. Broadcasting this professional granule with an accurate, rotary Granule Spreader ensures that all ants on the surface will contact your product. After applying your granules, apply water to the treated area. Granular insecticides are designed to be watered in; otherwise, the active ingredients are left on the surface, exposed to damaging ultraviolet rays and heat. Water will also help place the granules onto the surface of the soil, instead of allowing them to just rest on blades of grass. Read and follow all label instructions; keep pets and children off of all treated areas until dry. Talstar granules pose less hazards to people, pets, wildlife and the environment than Dursban, Diazinon, etc., but you should still follow good safety practices!

Demon EC (a.i.: Cypermethrin 25.3%): Low odor liquid concentrate which leaves no visible residue. Gives quick "Knock-Down" for German roaches and is the product of choice for drenching fire ant mounds. Use 1/2 to 1 ounce per gallon. Packaged in a 16 ounce, easy measure container that will make up to 32 gallons of solution. Similar to Cynoff EC. Kills most household pests.

Talstar Liquid Concentrate
A pint of Talstar liquid concentrate is $49 and will treat 16,000 to 20,000 square feet, when spraying for mole crickets, less for treating for ants, fire ants and chinch bugs. This liquid concentrate is also available in a quart which is only $69. No special preparation of the lawn is necessary. Simply apply Talstar concentrate at the rate of 1 ounce per thousand square feet of turf, using your hose end sprayer. The label rate for killing ants with Talstar liquid is only 1/2 ounce per thousand square feet. We have seen this product control ants for three months, at the rate of only 1/4 ounce per thousand square feet!

Talstar Granules
A 25lb. bag of Talstar is $32 and will treat up to 12,000 square feet. Talstar granules are best applied through a hand seeder or broadcast spreader. The granules are tiny enough to fall between blades of turf grass (out of sight from birds and pets), penetrating to the ground or thatch area where it belongs. Because of the sand pebble sized granules, regular drop spreaders do not give the precise coverage necessary.
