The kit fox has a gray coat, but unlike the gray fox does not have a stripe along the length of its tail.
They live in open deserts or wide grasslands and prefer dry areas.
Hunting after sunset, the kit fox eats small animals like kangaroo rats, jackrabbits, insects, fish and small birds.
They are not very afraid of humans and are not as cunning as other
foxes, resulting in frequent trapping and poisonings. There are three subspecies of the kit fox, the San Joaquin kit fox, considered to be endangered, the Desert kit fox from the Mojave Desert, and the Southern California Kit Fox a native to southern California that became extinct in 1903.
