Recent studies have shown that the best sprays for combating beetles and other tough to kill pests of trees are products containing either Permethrin or Bifenthrin. Permethrin has been available for several years and became the product of choice when spraying for certain borers in trees after Lindane was pulled from the marketplace. Many professionals who have been using Permethrin are now relying on Bifenthrin products in the fight against boring insects in trees, bark beetles. Onyx and Talstar Boring Beetles Trunk Applications Onyx Order Info The differences in Onyx and Talstar are important to consider. Talstar contains 7.9% Bifenthrin; Onyx contains 23.4 % Bifenthrin. This higher concentrate gives far greater yield per quart container, increasing cost effectiveness. Onyx is formulated with a special carrier that gives maximum residual. This residual holds up to rainfall and irrigation far better than conventional insecticide concentrates. Your residual will increase with both foliar and tree trunk applications. Prevention and control: Make applications of a spray mixture containing 1.0 to 2.0 pints of Onyx Insecticide per 100 gallons (0.25 to 0.5 Lbs. active ingredient/ 100 gallons) of water to the trunk of the tree with a hydraulic sprayer in the spring of the year to at least half way into the live crown. Spray until the bark is thoroughly wetted by the spray (usually 1 to 4 gallons of spray per tree.) Do not apply more than 0.2 Lbs. active ingredient (12.8 fluid ounces) of this product to trees per acre. Repeat application may be necessary if reinfestation is likely. Application rates and application timing differ according to the target pest and other factors peculiar to each local situation.
