Rid Your Home of Mouse, Rat Infestations
Rodent removal involves the use of rat and mouse baits, live traps, rodent repellents, electrical traps, glue traps or (in
extreme commercial cases) ultrasonic repellents.
A combination of two or more rat and mouse removal products can be used to enhance your
rodent removal program.
Every situation is different and each person has their own idea as to what is the
best type of rodent control. Some people are not comfortable using glue traps or rat
baits; some situations prohibit the use of rat baits. These situations can be for
child and pet safety, non-target animal safety or food preparation and serving concerns.
You must find a method that suits you, your situation and your surroundings. We will
discuss many products and methods, breaking down rodent removal into three basic groups:
First, take a look at rodent repellents that can be used in
rodent removal and rodent prevention. Rats and mice can be deterred or repelled by
several different types of products. Rat A-Way
is a
granular product that is used outdoors beneath trailers, beneath and around sheds, homes
or other structures in rodent prevention.
Varpel Rope repels rodents in the same manner as Rat-A-Way but is
packaged in a reusable rope. This rope can be cut into lengths
needed to protect objects from destructive rodents. Ropel is a liquid taste
deterrent that is sprayed outdoors on objects rodents are subject to gnawing, biting or
chewing. Ropel cannot be used on edible crops. Dr. T's Deer Blocker can be used to
deter animals from feeding on trees, plants, vegetables and other edible crops.
Combining a taste deterrent with Coyote Urine Powder (a
predator smell deterrent) will give better results when dealing with rats, mice or
chipmunks in gardens.
Note: Never use rodent repellents in the same area where rodenticides or rodent traps are
in use. The repellers will contaminate the baiting and trapping aspect of your
rodent removal program.
Another repellent that is used in certain indoor commercial applications is the Quad Blaster Ultrasonic
repeller. This device cannot be heard by humans and is to be used above work
areas or in large warehouses that are rarely frequented by humans. This ultrasonic
device can be used to eliminate and prevent rats, mice, squirrels, flying squirrels, bats,
birds or other unwanted wildlife.
There are several types of rodent traps to choose from, but
they are basically live traps or kill traps. Glue traps, snap traps and Rat Zapper 2000 rodent traps are examples of kill traps.
Glue traps are available in 3 different sizes (ranging from mouse size to rat size.)
Conventional wooden snap traps (ours have expanded triggers) can be used but many of our
customers are changing out their regular snap traps with the new T-Rex Rat Traps. The T-Rex is easier to set, has a
faster and stronger trigger, holds rats better and can also be used inside a tamper resistant bait station to keep trap out of reach of
children and pets.
The Rat Zapper 2000 electric rat trap is becoming very
popular with those who want to kill their rodent pests as quickly and humanely as
possible. The Rat Zapper can be used for all types of rodent removal as an
alternative to mouse and rat baits, snap traps and glue traps.
Live animal traps for rodent control are available in different sizes and styles.
The wind-up mouse traps have been used for many years. This type of trap
usually does not harm mice. It is possible for the mouse to accidentally get caught
in the trap mechanism, resulting in death to the rodent, especially if the trap is wound
too tightly. Wind-up mouse traps are mainly used in warehouses and other areas where
baits and snap traps are not acceptable. If your main concern is to humanely capture
mice for removal, use a Tin
Cat or Run Way

Both traps (Tin Cat and Run Way) allow mice to enter the trap but have one-way doors that
prevent them from escaping. Once your mice have been captured, these traps are
designed for easy release or disposal of the unwanted rodents and your humane live traps
will once again be ready to set back into areas where mice are a problem.
For chipmunk removal use the Chipmunk Trap.
This is a humane live trap that can be used to trap chipmunks, mice and is a favorite for
those who own pet rodents that frequently escape and need to be captured in a home or
classroom.
For situations where baits and kill traps are not acceptable for rat removal, use the
humane Rat and Squirrel
Trap. This trap is perfect for capturing large rodents and is designed to not
harm animals. Professionally designed for easy catch and release.
Rodent baits are simply materials
that rodents love to eat that have rat and mouse killing chemicals, usually
anti-coagulants. There are many different forms of rodent baits on the market;
professionals usually prefer bait pellets (in bulk or place pack packaging) and bait
blocks. When using a tamper resistant bait station
or baiter, bait blocks are the safest form to use. Pellets are easily scattered by
the rodents, leaving a potentially lethal bait in unwanted areas that can effect
non-target pets or animals. Certain rodent bait blocks are manufactured especially
for rodent bait stations such as the Protecta Rat Bait Station
and the RTU Mouse Bait Station. Contrac Bait Blocks are best for these types of baiters.
You can also use Talon Weather Bloks and Generation Mini Blocks in rodent bait stations.
If there are guard dogs or pets in the area, Contrac is best. Avoid using Talon in
areas where pets might possibly come into contact with your rat bait.
